JAKARTA – On Thursday (31/7/2019), Departemen Ilmu Ekonomi FEB UI held a weekly seminar with an international speaker entitled “Public Transport and Sorting of the Urban Poor: The Case of Jakarta.” Kyri M.J. Janssen from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Netherland was the speaker at this seminar. Ms. Janssen studied Spatial, Transport, and Environmental Economics as well as International Economics and Trade.

Ms. Janssen first explained the sorting patterns, such as monocentric city model. From the pattern, Ms. Janssen elaborated the difference between cities around the world. US cities prove that public transport was found to enhance poverty. European cities meanwhile show that the poor mostly lived in the suburban area where public transports are rare. She further explained the condition of Jakarta and based on her research.

Ms. Janssen concludes that the theory on mode heterogeneity between rich moreover poor does not give any additional understanding in sorting patterns of Jakarta. Thus, there is no relationship between sorting urban poor and public transportation. Other factors such as population density, flooding vulnerability, access to the commercial area and access to open space may give stronger relations to sorting urban poor.

The workshop was closed with a QnA session and open discussion. Hopefully, the workshop can give us a deeper understanding of our city. We thank Ms. Kyri M.J. Janssen for coming and sharing this valuable knowledge to us! (Des)
