DEPOK – (2/11/2021) QS Quacquarelli Symonds, global higher education think-tank and compilers of the world’s most-consulted university rankings portfolio, today released the fourteenth edition of their annual list of Asia’s best higher education institutions. The National University of Singapore is named the continent’s best university for the fourth consecutive year.

The 2022 QS World University Rankings: Asia contains 687 universities, including forty new entries, and is QS’s most extensive independent comparison of the region’s higher education system. The table accounts for eleven key indicators of university performance, which capture academic standing, graduate employability, research quality and productivity, internationalization on campus, and the diversity of each institution’s international collaborations.

There are 33 Indonesian universities in this edition of the rankings; sixteen rank higher this year, fourteen rank lower and three are new entries. Both international academics and employers appreciate the leading Indonesian institutions: four make the top-100 for academic reputation and six for employer reputation. Universitas Indonesia (56th) is the national leader and has risen three places year on year. It is also the preferred Indonesian university by the 75,000 international employers surveyed by QS, and ranks 44th in the Employer Reputation indicator. Only another local university makes the top-50 in this crucial indicator (Gadjah Mada University), while another four make the top-100.  Universitas Indonesia achieves the second-best rank in the Academic Reputation indicator, based on a survey of 130,000 academics, taking the 43rd spot – two other local universities make the top-50 and another two the top-100. Universitas Indonesia best rank at indicator level is in in the Outbound Exchange Students, achieving the 22nd place regionally, while for the Inbound Exchange Students, it conquered the 31st spot.

Ben Sowter, Director of Research at QS, said: “This year’s edition of our regional comparison of Asia’s universities indicates that Indonesia’s best universities enjoy strong recognition among both the global academic community and hiring managers internationally.

To improve further, Indonesia’s higher education leaders should build research capabilities and infrastructure to compete regionally with countries with a more extended research tradition.
